What is Perinatal Mental Health?
I specialize in perinatal mental health, but what exactly is that? Well, for most of us, we have heard of postpartum depression. This is often used as an “umbrella term” to encompas any mental health issue that can arise in the postpartum period. You may even hear people use the phrase, “She has postpartum” to indicate someone experiencing mood symptoms in the postpartum period. As research has continued to emerge about this topic, we are beginning to understand the full spectrum of symptoms that can arise in the period of time during trying to conceive, pregnancy, and postpartum. Not only do people experience depression in the perinatal period, but they also can experience anxiety, obssessive thoughts, and/or symptoms of posttraumatic stress. We now understand that these symptoms can arise at any moment, not only in the postpartum period. We also now understand that it is not only women who can experience these symptoms, but also men and individuals of all genders.
A perinatal mental health specialist is someone who understands all of the mood disorders that can arise in the perinatal period. Seeing someone who is well-versed in your specific experience is important if you are wanting to get the best treatment available. If you were needing brain surgery, you’d want to see a neurosurgeon, not a general surgeon, as a neurosurgeon has specialized training in surgery on the brain and spinal cord. In the same way, if you feel you are experiencing a perinatal mental health issue, it’s important to seek care from someone with specialized training in this area.
